History

The land for the cemetery (Coos County tax lot 901) was obtained from J. P. and Sally E. Stemmler. The deed was dated July 19, 1886 and recorded August 16, 1886. The second meeting was held June 8, 1889. The board of directors elected for three years were: Charles Howe, President, Charles Heller, Secretary, and G.G. Swan, Treasurer.

Some graves were moved to the cemetery when the association was formed so it is difficult to determine whose grave was first. The oldest dates are Eugene W. Schofield buried 1880, and Trixy A. Weekly buried 1880. On January 2, 1961 there are 292 graves in the cemetery.

G. G. Swan, was president from 1897 until 1929 except for two years 1915 and 1916. J. N. Gearhart has served continuously as president since May 1929. Dora E. Gearhart has served continuously as secretary since 1924. At a board meeting in 1893 a building was talked about. There is no definite account of the actual building process.

In 1905 the chapel was installed. On July 14, 1923 a meeting was called to consider building a new chapel. August 11, 1923 it was decided that one thousand dollars must be on hand before starting the building. Money was obtained by subscription and three basket socials. Charles Barklow’s bid of one thousand three hundred eight-five dollars was accepted on May 24, 1924. The new chapel was built that same year.

Also in 1924 the first addition (Coos County tax lot 1200) to the cemetery was obtained from Alice Stemmler Luttrell.

In 2007, a second addition was added to the cemetery by a donation of one acre from Lone Rock Timber Company (Coos County tax lot 903). The stumps were removed and burned by Dale Wilson at no cost to the cemetery in 2010.
